1 Day Aboriginal Cultural Experience
A day of art, story and country with the Arrernte people of Mparntwe (Alice Springs) and Tjoritja (West MacDonnell Ranges).
New for 2027, the Emu Run 1 Day Aboriginal Cultural Experience is a unique addition to Alice Springs' visitor offerings.
This full-day tour invites you into Arrernte culture through the eyes of its custodians. Learn traditional art techniques, hear stories passed down through generations, and explore the dramatic landscapes of Mparntwe (Alice Springs) and Tjoritja (West MacDonnell Ranges) - a hands-on, immersive way to connect with the oldest continuous culture on Earth.
The day begins with a dot painting workshop at the Ayeye Atyenhe (a-year-a-chin) Art Centre in the Alice Springs Botanic Gardens, hosted by local artists. As you learn traditional techniques, you'll hear the stories behind them and create your own artwork to take home. It's an intimate session - less a painting class than a step into a sacred tradition, leaving you with a new appreciation for Indigenous art.
From there, we head west to Tjoritja (West MacDonnell Ranges) and Angkerle Atwatye (Standley Chasm). After lunch at the café, an Indigenous guide and traditional owner leads you through the chasm, sharing its cultural significance and dreaming stories. Known for its towering 80-metre red-rock walls and the fiery glow that lights them at midday, Angkerle Atwatye is one of the region's great natural marvels. Along the way, hear how the Arrernte people used bush medicine and thrived on this land for thousands of years.
The tour concludes with a scenic drive back to Alice Springs.
