Australia is the driest inhabited continent in the world and South Australia is the driest State. The Adelaide Hills are among the wettest regions of South Australia, with Uraidla and Basket Range receiving high rainfall due to the influence of the Mount Lofty Ranges. The Sixth Creek is now the only remaining permanent creek in the Adelaide Hills.
Enjoy this stunning ride from Uraidla through the Adelaide Hill ranges along quiet roads with breathtaking views of orchards, vineyards, and native vegetation which lead you to the Sixth Creek Catchment Groups (6CCG) project sites in the valley following the Sixth Creek along Merchants Road, a no through gravel road in Basket Range. Be in awe of the mighty native bush ranges which skirt the valley.
Informative signage along Merchants Road showcase the exceptional planning, research, grant writing, constructive working bees and propagation of native plants to attack over-populated weed trees, shrubs, grasses and ground covers. This landcare project has been strongly supported by local volunteers, funding from State Government, Adelaide Hills Council, the Federal Green Army Program, and private landholder contributions since 1998. Visit the Sixth Creek Catchment Group online.
Highlights along this Route to stop and enjoy
- Breathtaking views from Uraidla through the ranges along quiet country roads
- Stop and enjoy the 6CCG project sites flagged by signage along Merchants Road
- Perfect places along Merchants Road to relax with your BYO picnic
- In the warmer months enjoy a dip in the permanent waterhole along Merchants Road
- On the return ride keep an eye out for the waterfall along Hunters Road
