Itinerary
Day 1: Arrival in Kununurra
Arrival in Kununurra. After the airport transfer to the hotel, the rest of the day is at your leisure. Relax by the pool in the beautiful hotel grounds or take a walk to the nearby town center of Kununurra.
Accommodation: Kununurra Country Club Resort
Day 2: El Questro – Wyndham – Kununurra (B)
Early in the morning, we drive to El Questro Wilderness Park, where a short hike will take us through one of its many gorges. The journey then continues along the Great Northern Highway, between the Durack Range and the Carr Boyd Range, heading toward Wyndham. Five Rivers Lookout in Wyndham, the northernmost town in Western Australia, offers spectacular views of the Ord, Forrest, King, Durack, and Pentecost Rivers, the Cambridge Gulf, as well as the surrounding mangrove swamps and tidal flats. Depending on the season, we visit Marglu Billabong in the Parry Lagoons Nature Reserve, a bird sanctuary home to over 20,000 birds. "The Grotto" is the name of an idyllic swimming hole located at the entrance to a short but picturesque gorge. Enclosed by steep rock walls, this natural pool is fed by a 15-meter waterfall during the rainy season. Return to Kununurra.
Accommodation: Kununurra Country Club Resort
Day 3: Ord River Cruise (B)
Shortly before noon, we are picked up from the hotel and taken by bus to Lake Argyle. We make a brief stop at the historic Durack Homestead Museum, a replica of the original family homestead built using its original stones. From a nearby lookout, we admire the vast expanse of Lake Argyle. During the 55 km boat cruise back to Kununurra, we experience spectacular landscapes and a rich variety of flora and fauna. After enjoying a vibrant sunset at the end of the cruise, we are transferred back to the hotel.
Accommodation: Kununurra Country Club Resort
Day 4: Bungle Bungle Scenic Flight & 4WD Adventure (B/L)
Today's excursion is a truly unforgettable experience. It offers a fantastic opportunity to explore the unique Bungle Bungle rock formations both from the air and on foot. From the small aircraft, you'll enjoy breathtaking views of Lake Argyle, the Carr Boyd Range, and vast cattle stations. As the plane descends, a sandstone wonderland unfolds before you. Traveling by 4WD and on foot, you'll reach the impressive Cathedral Gorge through steep rock domes and bizarre sandstone beehives. During a picnic, take in the natural rock sculptures that resemble giant beehives. On the return flight, enjoy aerial views of the Argyle Diamond Mine and the rugged hills of the Osmand Range. This day is guaranteed to stay with you for a lifetime.
Accommodation: Kununurra Country Club Resort
Day 5: Kununurra – Fitzroy Crossing (B)
The journey continues along the Great Northern Highway, between the Durack Range and the Carr Boyd Range, heading toward Halls Creek, which gained attention in 1885 during a gold rush. A short detour along a dusty track takes us to the so-called China Wall—a vertical wall of light-colored quartz, up to 5 meters high, formed naturally through erosion and not man-made. The journey then continues along the Great Northern Highway to Fitzroy Crossing.
Accommodation: Fitzroy River Lodge
Day 6: Fitzroy Crossing – Broome (B)
Today's stage begins with a visit to Geikie Gorge National Park. During a boat cruise through the 14 km long and up to 30 m deep gorge, there's a chance to spot freshwater crocodiles and admire the remains of an ancient, dried-up coral reef. Near Derby, the tropical administrative center of the West Kimberley region, we visit its main attraction with a dark past—the Prison Tree. In the hollow trunk of this ancient boab tree, Aboriginal prisoners were once confined. Today, the swollen giant is protected and should no longer be entered, out of respect for the site and its history. In the evening, we arrive in Broome, a vibrant town where the sun smiles from the sky and the moon regularly sends a staircase down to Earth.
Accommodation: Cable Beach Club Resort
Day 7: Broome City Tour (B)
Discover the vibrant town of Broome with us today. With roughly 15,000 residents, Broome is the travel hub of the Kimberley region. Its blend of intellectual and alternative vibes makes it very much on trend. Chinatown—the compact, cohesively styled town centre with a subtle Asian touch—is the focal point of local activity. Here you’ll find *Sun Pictures*, the world’s oldest open-air cinema, along with numerous sidewalk cafés, restaurants, galleries, souvenir shops, and pearl jewellery boutiques. Broome was—and remains—a pearling town: once prized mainly for mother-of-pearl, today famed for cultured pearls. In the early days, pearl diving was extremely hazardous; two evocative burial grounds, the Chinese Cemetery and the Japanese Cemetery, still bear witness to Broome’s multicultural past.
At Gantheaume Point, where sheer red sandstone cliffs plunge into the deep blue ocean, 130-million-year-old dinosaur footprints can be seen at low tide. In the clean, warm, turquoise waters off Broome grow pearls among the most coveted in the world. Divers from across the globe sought their fortune here, helping to make Broome Australia’s pearling capital. At one of the few pearl farms in the Kimberley open to visitors, you’ll learn all about modern pearl cultivation.
Cable Beach—one of the safest and most beautiful swimming beaches anywhere—invites you to spend a relaxed afternoon. Enjoy your free time!
Accommodation: Cable Beach Club Resort
Day 8: Broome – Port Hedland (B)
On today's journey south, we are accompanied by the sparse, low vegetation of the Great Sandy Desert. The entire northern coastline of Western Australia is lined with extensive mangrove forests. A notable exception is Eighty Mile Beach, where the white sand gleams in competition with the blue sea, inviting you to linger or collect shells. However, stingrays, stonefish, and sharks provide good reasons to stay on land. In the evening, we arrive in Port Hedland.
Accommodation: Hospitality Motel, Port Hedland
Day 9: Port Hedland – Karijini National Park (B)
After breakfast, we leave Port Hedland, where—with a bit of luck—we might witness one of the impressive iron ore trains, typically 2 to 3 km long, arriving or departing. Heading south, we travel through the Pilbara region. In the language of the Indigenous people, the name “bilypara” means “dry”—a fitting description, as the region, nearly twice the size of Germany, is characterized by red desert and rugged red mountain ranges. Tonight’s accommodation is located in the heart of Karijini National Park, ensuring a fantastic atmosphere and a peaceful night’s rest.
Accommodation: Karijini Eco Retreat
Day 10: Karijini National Park (B/L)
The rock formations in Western Australia’s second-largest national park are among the oldest on Earth, and the landscapes are some of the most colorful and striking in all of Australia. The iron-rich highlands, tinted reddish-brown, feature countless gorges with permanent waterholes and spectacular lookouts. Deeply carved gorges and vibrant rock formations create the magic of this rugged terrain. We hike to Fortescue Falls and Fern Pool, where the year-round pools invite a refreshing dip. A visit to Oxer Lookout offers a breathtaking view over the convergence of four dramatic gorges.
Accommodation: Karijini Eco Retreat
Day 11: Karijini – Exmouth (Ningaloo Reef) (B)
Early this morning, we leave Western Australia’s iron ore region and head toward the coast. In the evening, we arrive in Exmouth, at the northern end of the Ningaloo Reef. Experts say the underwater world here is even more diverse than at the Great Barrier Reef.
Accommodation: Mantarays Ningaloo Beach Resort
Day 12: Exmouth & Ningaloo Reef (B)
From Vlaming Head Lighthouse, enjoy a magnificent view over North West Cape, the Ningaloo Reef, and the towering antennas of the Harold E. Holt Naval Communication Station. During a hike through Mandu Mandu Gorge, we keep an eye out for rare rock wallabies. At the picturesque and safe-for-swimming Turquoise Bay, we experience the rich and colorful underwater world of Ningaloo Marine Park. Return to the hotel in Exmouth.
Accommodation: Mantarays Ningaloo Beach Resort
Day 13: Coral Bay – Carnarvon (B)
The reef lies close to the shore and can be explored with fins and a snorkel or on a glass-bottom boat tour. It is home to a wide variety of marine life, including corals, rare starfish, crabs, lobsters, and over 500 species of fish. In the afternoon, we enjoy a leisurely drive from the southern end of the Ningaloo Reef to Carnarvon.
Accommodation: Hospitality Motel, Carnarvon
Day 14: Carnarvon – Monkey Mia (Shark Bay) (B)
Today's journey through the Australian Outback leads us into the Shark Bay region. Our first stop is at the unique Shell Beach. At Hamelin Pool, we marvel at the stromatolites—Earth’s oldest known life forms. In the afternoon, we arrive in Monkey Mia, home to the famous dolphins that voluntarily swim to shore almost every day for feeding. After dinner, we enjoy a short evening walk, where a local Aboriginal guide enchants us with ancient stories and the sounds of the didgeridoo beneath Western Australia's brilliant starry sky.
Optional: Monkey Mia Sunset Cruise
Enjoy the stunning sights of the sky’s continual change of colours reflected off the sea during this relaxing 1.5-hour cruise. Purchase a drink from our fully licensed Ocean Lounge Bar, or bring your own (BYO permitted). A tranquil way to end the day.
Accommodation: Monkey Mia Dolphin Resort
Day 15: Monkey Mia – Kalbarri (B)
In the morning, you'll have the chance to witness dolphin feeding up close and learn many fascinating facts about these intelligent creatures. The Shark Bay Interpretive Centre in Denham offers extensive information about this World Heritage Area. Depending on the season, our onward journey from Shark Bay to Kalbarri National Park may be accompanied by Western Australia’s famous wildflowers. We stop in the park to take in the breathtaking view down into Murchison Gorge. By evening, we arrive in the charming town of Kalbarri.
Accommodation: Kalbarri Edge Resort
Day 16: Kalbarri – Geraldton (B)
After breakfast, we head back into Kalbarri National Park. The rugged coastal formations here are of stunning beauty. We continue along the coastal road via Port Gregory to Geraldton. From there, we take a scenic flight to the Wallabi Islands, part of the Houtman Abrolhos Archipelago. In 1629, the Dutch trading ship *Batavia* was wrecked here, followed by a bloody mutiny.
Accommodation: Hospitality Motel, Geraldton
Day 17: Geraldton – Perth (B)
A visit to Mount Scott gives us a panoramic view of Geraldton and Grey’s Bay, as well as a memorial for the victims of the warship HMAS *Sydney II*, which sank off the coast. We then tour the architecturally striking St. Francis Xavier Cathedral in the center of Geraldton. Leaving the sunniest city in Western Australia behind, we enjoy a scenic coastal drive through Leeman and Jurien Bay, reaching Cervantes—the gateway to Nambung National Park.
Here, we explore the Pinnacles, one of the state’s most visited natural wonders. These thousands of bizarre limestone pillars, up to five meters high, rise from a flat, otherworldly desert landscape, offering spectacular photo opportunities. The journey continues via Lancelin to the southern metropolis of Perth, where this extraordinary tour concludes at your hotel.
