5 DAY FLINDERS RANGES SPECTACULAR
Day 1 – Broken Hill to Arkaroola Wilderness Sanctuary: 484kms – Leaving Broken Hill at
8.30am we follow the Barrier Highway to Yunta, where we leave the bitumen and head into
the South Australian outback. Enjoy a picnic lunch on the verandah of the abandoned
Waukeringa hotel, and wonder how life may have been in this remote outpost in days gone
by. Heading north into the Flinders Ranges on our way to Arkaroola Wilderness Sanctuary
you will be amazed and delighted by the ever-changing landscape. Late afternoon we settle
into our motel lodge accommodation for the next 2 nights overlooking the breath-taking
vistas around Arkaroola. (L,D)
Day 2 – Arkaroola Famous Ridgetop Tour – We start today with an experience you will
never forget, as we hop on board a specially constructed open-top 4WD vehicle to do the
famous Arkaroola Ridgetop Tour! We travel to the top of Sillers Lookout to take in the
endless view of this timeless terrain. Your trained local guide will share their knowledge of
Arkaroola’s 1600 million year geological history as you enjoy an unforgettable journey
through some of the most spectacularly rugged country on earth. Wonder at the beauty of
Arkaroola's crystal Mount Gee, and learn about Reg & Grizelda Sprigg who made it their
mission to protect this unique wilderness area. This afternoon there is time to just sit back
and relax as you soak up the stunning scenery, or perhaps you would like to take a walk to
see if you can spot some of the resident Yellow Footed Rock Wallabies. Tonight after dinner
you have the option to join a star tour where you can learn about the heavens in Arkaroola's
own observatory. (B,L,D)
Day 3 – Arkaroola to Parachilna: 184kms – This morning we leave Arkaroola and head
through the Gammon Ranges, which are one of many mountain groups that make up the
Flinders Ranges. Our first stop is at Chambers Gorge, a magnificent deep eroded canyon
into the ancient ranges. Enjoy a relaxing walk along the dry creek bed to a remote gorge
where you will see some wonderful examples of Aboriginal rock engravings that are
thousands of years and old made by the Adnyamathanha people. Travelling through
massive outback sheep stations on our journey today is a great way to get a glimpse into the
enormity of our country. Our next stop is at the little village of Blinman, the highest town in
the Flinders Ranges, before we take the spectacular drive through Parachilna Gorge on our
way to the iconic Prairie Hotel. Enjoy some luxury tonight in the unique rammed earth
deluxe hotel rooms and a great outback dinner, with a slightly 'feral' twist - a signature of the
Prairie Hotel. (B,L,D)
Day 4 – Parachilna to Rawnsley Park Station: 132kms – Heading into the Flinders
Ranges National Park today we experience more of this wonderful landscape. Both
Brachina & Bunyeroo Gorges are highlights of the region, with many great photo
opportunities along the way. After a relaxing picnic lunch we visit Wilpena Pound Visitor
Centre, the starting point for our afternoon walk into the pound. This area is abundant in bird
& wildlife, along with amazing scenery. Tonight’s destination is Rawnsley park station where
we will be staying in comfortable cabin style accommodation with a great dinner in the
Woolshed Restaurant. There are plenty of opportunities here for walks with spectacular
views of Rawnsley Bluff on the southern face of Wilpena Pound. (B,L,D)
Day 5 – Rawnsley Park to Broken Hill: 426kms – For those who would like to get an
amazing aerial view of Wilpena Pound and the surrounding ranges there is the opportunity
to organise a scenic flight before we leave this morning - please let us know if you would like
to take this option when booking (appx $215pp for 30 minute flight). Heading south we visit
the small township of Hawker, home to local artist Jeff Morgan, where you can visit his
gallery to purchase one of his outback paintings, or perhaps view his stunning panorama of
the Flinders Ranges. Soon we are back into wheat country with the landscape changing
constantly along the way. A visit to the quaint township of Orooroo, and a picnic lunch is our
last stop, before we head back along the bitumen for our return to Broken Hill and trips ends with a
night accommodation at a central motel. (B = breakfast, L = lunch)
Includes: 5 nights’ accommodation, 4.5 hour Ridgetop Tour at Arkaroola, meals as indicated (B = breakfast, L = lunch,
